The Same as Sandwich

The Same as Sandwich

The word for "sandwich" actually originated from the 4th Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu. Montagu is said to have popularized the concept of using bread as a utensil in 1762. An addicted gambler, he spent long hours over the cards. Not wanting to stop to eat, he ordered his meal of meat served between slices of bread so he could consume it using his non-playing hand. Others soon requested "the same as Sandwich." The sandwich was introduced to America in 1840 by Elizabeth Leslie in her "Directions for Cookery." Her recipe for a ham sandwich was considered worthy of being a... Read more

Saints & Sinners Comedy Tour

Saints & Sinners Comedy Tour

"The Saints and Sinners Comedy Tour" mixes the mainstream, working man’s material of Matthew Lumpkin with the ego boosted flair of Patrick Jolle into one hilarious and down right entertaining comedy experience. The show opens with Patrick Jolle, an eccentric, no holds barred comedian with a rapid fire delivery that is sometimes irreverent, often juvenile, and usually risque.  Patrick's antics and memorable punchlines deliver a wickedly accurate jab to the funny bone. Next up is Matthew Lumpkin, an intelligent family man with a common-sense philosophy.  His energetic story telling ability and charismatic stage presence raises the bar far past stereotypical "Southern" standup.... Food and Family - July

By Chef Alan J. Ingram II The Fourth of July rapidly approaches as I write this column.  Every year, I get a little excited about it. Not only is Independence Day a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, it is a day commonly associated with fireworks, parades, picnics, fairs, family reunions and my personal favorite…barbecues. This Fourth of July I planned a small ‘get-together’ with five of the most special people in my life…My beautiful wife, Jen, and my four precious daughters.  We started planning the menu last week.  The requests started flooding in immediately, mostly from Aiden... Mother’s day in our family is a big deal and a very important day. We try to plan a family gathering so we can all share mom on this day. The gathering will be at our house once again. This makes it much... Read more

This was just one of the family orientated events held by Skeet’s Family Club.  We have an advisory board made up of parents, business leaders & community sponsors that meet monthly to discuss community events and come up with new ideas based on bringing ‘family time’ back to families.  It was this advisory board that elected me to host... Here's how to keep kids healthy and happy

Guiding children into a lifestyle that keeps them physically and emotionally fit is an important goal. Here's how to do it. * Encourage exercise. It keeps children feeling positive and upbeat. Only one in four kids gets 20 minutes of vigorous activity every day, according to the National Association for Sport and Physical Education in Reston, Virginia. Kids who exercise have a lower risk of becoming overweight and developing heart disease and diabetes later in life. A minimum goal should be 30 minutes of activity three days a week. It could just be soccer in the yard, or a walk. * Teach hand... Read more
